Introduction

Welcome to this 7 day devotional about God’s design for marriage and sexuality. I’m so excited for you and your family for what you are going to discover together over the next 7 days. As you know, there are many different messages about sexuality in our world and our children are constantly navigating these messages to discover what is true and what is false; what is healthy, and what is harmful.

The purpose of this devotional is to lay a foundation from the Bible for why God ultimately designed sex and marriage. By having this firm foundation in place, our hope is that your children will view sexuality in its proper context and better equipped to evaluate the many messages they will receive about romantic relationships throughout their lives. As well, by knowing that God created marriage and sexuality for reasons that extend beyond our mere happiness, but that ultimately marriage and sexuality were created for God’s glory first and our happiness second, your children will be able to properly prioritize their future relationships in light of the glory of God.

In order to understand God’s plan in designing of sex and marriage, we first need to understand God’s plan for the design of all things. Why did God create the universe? Why did he create humans? Why is the world so broken, and how is God going to fix it? By answering some of these questions first we can then better answer some of the more specific questions about the meaning and purpose of human sexuality. On day 1 we will learn about God’s creation of the world and humanity. On day 2 we learn about God’s creation of human relationships. On day 3 we will learn about the problem of sin and death, and how it has corrupted human relationships. On day 4 we will learn about God’s remedy for sin and death through the person of Jesus Christ. On day 5 we will learn about symbolism, and discover two important activities that Jesus gave us to symbolize spiritual realities. On day 6 we learn about how marriage and sexuality are intended to symbolize a great spiritual reality. On day 7 we will learn about eternity, and what role marriage and sexuality play in light of our preparation for the next life.

This devotional was designed in a way that would try to involve the entire family. If you have older children, perhaps have them read the questions and scriptures. After reading the questions I encourage you to wait a bit before providing an answer, allowing your children to critically think and consider their answers. If you feel inadequate to teach any topic in this devotional then simply let the devotional and scriptures do the teaching. Before each day I encourage you to ask God to help you guide your family. At the end of each day you will have the opportunity to pray as a family asking God to guide you together into all truth, and I am confident that he will.

God bless you and your family through this devotional.
